Pros And Cons Of Marble Floors

Nov 03, 2017

Marble has been used to create elegant floors for thousands of years, and its sophisticated good looks continue to make it popular today. With its striking grain patterns and creamy colors, it’s one of the most recognizable — and beautiful — natural building materials.

There are hundreds of types of marble from quarries all over the world, each with its own unique personality.

Pros of Marble Floors

•     Polish: Unlike many other stone flooring materials, marble is a very hard stone surface that can take an extremely high polish. Polishing also tends to bring out the colors in the stone, making them more noticeable and dramatic.

•     Light transmission: One of the reasons that marble has so often been used in great works of sculpture is that it has a slightly translucent quality.  Even in darker marbles, the play of light across the surface of the stone can be quite lovely.

•     Color: Marble floor tiles and slabs are available in a wide variety of colors. There are also multicolored marble materials available, which feature a variety of hues arranged in the surface of each piece.

When marble is quarried, it is extracted in large sheets called slabs. These slabs contain natural features that form a symphony of colors across the surface of the piece.

Cons Of Marble Flooring

While the beauty of marble cannot be stressed enough, having a marble flooring in your home comes with its own drawbacks.

The Price Of Luxury:The luxury look of marble isn’t just for show nor does it come cheap.

•     Slippery Surfaces: Placing large marble tiles in kitchens and bathrooms is a big mistake. When polished or cleaned, the floor tends to lose its friction, presenting a hazard to anyone walking on it. It’s best that this material is restricted to rooms where liquid spills almost never occur like the foyer or living room.A polished marble floor is easy to scratch.

•     interacts with an acid: Marble is also base material that reacts whenever it interacts with an acid. Their interaction results in a stain on the surface of marble floor tiles. And since acid cleaners are used to remove calcium deposits, using them on marble flooring (which is made of calcium) could damage the surface. If you’ve got marble flooring in the kitchen, it’s susceptible to permanent staining if acids like sauces and fruit juices are splashed on it.

Marble is much denser and harder than its close relatives travertine and limestone. Due to this durability along with its glorious surface interest, marble floors are used in many boutique hotels and other glamorous locations. Different types of marble present different characteristics.
