Marble Slab: Tips And Tricks

Use of a marble slab in home construction can be an expensive proposition. Therefore, maintaining your marble accents is an important function to preserve not only its beauty, but its integrity too. Cleaning marble slabs is not a very difficult task, in fact, the ease of maintenance makes marble use that much more popular. Due to the costly investment in marble countertops, flooring, tile walls and decorative structures that a homeowner makes, special care is also a wise investment to keep its beauty and shine aglow.

Ways to Maintain Marble

Stain Removal

Make a poultice from white absorbent material such as a napkin, blotter, paper towel, or facial tissue dampened with one of the chemicals below to dissolve that stain. You can also mix whiting with that chemical to make a soft paste to cover the stain. The poultice should be left on the stain from one hour up to 48 hours depending on the age and depth of the stain.

Plastic wrap held in place by masking tape can be put over the poultice to keep it damp, otherwise, it will have to be re-dampened periodically. Mix only enough poultice for immediate use. You'll need to mix a second batch later if another application is needed. Be sure to wear gloves to avoid skin irritation.

Be careful with drinks when congregating around marble accents and other decorative structures. Liquids such as all types of citrus juices, beer, wine, coffee and tea can be very harmful if spilled. Clean these liquids with a little bit of hydrogen peroxide mixed with just a few drops of ammonia.

Types of Marble Sealers

There are three main types of sealers to choose from:

Marble  Impregnating Sealers: This is the best choice for superior protection. This natural stone sealer will bond to the marble stone slab or marbleat a molecular level. It will not affect the surface color and will repel oils and waters from inside the stone.

Marble Penetrating Sealers: These sealers actually seep into the stone and are effective in repelling liquids and oils. This sealer will not affect the look of the stone upon application.

Marble Topical Sealers: Topical sealers of urethane or acrylic are applied to the top of a natural stone marble tile surface, acting more as enhancers. They provide some level of protection but wear out quickly, especially if applied to high traffic floor tile or busy kitchen countertops. Resealing will need to be done frequently.
