Marble Guide: Cleaning And Care

Oct 31, 2017

During extensive remodels, many home owners will opt for the use of natural stone floors, such as marble, to finish off their main foyer, or entryway. These marbles look incredibly regal, but can be tough to maintain and keep clean. You will enjoy your marble for a lifetime by following these simple tips.

Cleaning Tips for Your Marble

Marble can be cleaned, polished, and kept sealed and cleaned with the proper products. Marble is a soft limestone and can be easily etched and dulled by products containing acids. Many bathroom cleaners contain acids in their formulas, as do some soaps and shampoos. Marble is beautiful but is not an ideal product for the showers because of the constant exposure to soaps, shampoos, and the use of improper cleaners by those who are not familiar with the nature of marble.

Regular Cleaning

Wash marble surfaces with lukewarm water and wipe dry with a clean cloth. Wiping surfaces with a damp chamois will not leave streaks. Once or twice a year, depending on the soil level, wash with a mild detergent solution (dish soap and warm water), rinse, and wipe dry.

A light coat of wax will protect the surface of marble, but isn't essential. Use colorless wax and don't wax white marble or it may yellow. A marble sealer can be applied to clean marble to protect it from staining and allow soil to be wiped off with a damp cloth.

Maintenance Tips for Your Marble

Marble showers should be wiped dry after each use to prevent hard water minerals from etching surface. It should be sealed with marble sealer about every six months, cleaned with recommended pH neutral cleaner, and polished each week with marble polish. There are pH neutral disinfectant sprays available that are safe if mildew is a problem.

There are some daily things you can do to keep your marble looking beautiful. Avoid resting anything hot, like a hair dryer or curling iron, on the marble surface because you can end up with burn marks that you wouldn’t expect. Clean all liquids immediately by gently wiping them away with a clean cloth in a gentle blotting motion.
