How To Identify Marble Grade

Dec 01, 2017

There is much mystery about the marble classification of grades or qualities. Its quality level grading is done by each quarry or supplier according to their own needs, clients and markets. Therefore, there is no standard grading for this marble. This situation makes it extremely difficult for a client to be able to judge the qualities that are presented.

The reality is that there are many second grade marble variations being sold as first grade. Many suppliers play with this uncertainty and lack of standards to sell lower grades for a higher price. Unless you know the history of this marble and the way the quarries have been evolving, you can easily fall into this and end up buying lower grade for the price of a higher grade.

How can I discern the grade of the marble? Just by eye? Or should I, again, expect the salesperson to give me that information correctly? there is a tremendous difference between the inferior grades and the Grade A.

Well, with this article we try to bring some light into this grading issue by presenting what could be considered,Collectors use interchangeably a descriptive grading system (Mint, Near Mint, Good,Collectible), and a numerical grading system based on a scale of 1 to 10.

Near Mint: A marble that has seen minor usage. There may be evidence of hit marks, usually tiny to small subsurface moons, pinprick chips, tiny to small flakes or tiny to small bruises. If there is noticeable damage, then it is on only one side of the marble and the other side is Mint. (8.9-8.0)

Mint: A marble that is in original condition. The surface is unmarked and undamaged. There may be some minor rubbing on the surface, however, the marble is the way it came from the factory.(10.0-9.0).

There are grades of desirability for marble that is based on veining and appearance. The showier stuff commands a much higher price, they differ mostly in color and veining. Although marble will vary in hardness due to the area it is mined, marble is not going to differ significantly on the Mohs scale. It's all soft, and subject to impact stars and nicks.
