Polished Marble Backsplash From My Experience

Please consider the physical qualities of marble: it is porous & prone to staining.

While your backsplash won't see as much wear & tear as your countertops, cooking grease & splatters will penetrate marble is one of the higher-priced marbles on the market. If you want to give a marble backsplash a try, there are a few things you can do to keep it looking nice:

1. Use a polished (not honed) finish - dull finishes increase the surface porosity of stone.

2. Seal marble with a professional-grade marble sealer immediately after it is installed & seal it several times a year thereafter to insure protection against stains.

3. Wipe splatters up quickly to prevent staining.

Your polished marble will show dull and possibly discolored spots everywhere a splash of wine, coffee, soda, salad dressing, lemon juice (or any of the multitude of other acidic foods found in every kitchen) hits the marble.

So, if you decide you want to make your marble backsplash "honed" or more rough in appearance, then use an acidic grout remover you can get at any hardware store.

If you want to preserve the marble polish then I recommend you use Hard Water / Soap Scum Remover. It's made for cleaning shower soap scum, but it works very well for grout haze too and it won't damage your marble.

Marble is a natural material and soft and porous , the polished marble (which is more dressy obviously) is beautiful but does etch and stain more so than a honed and sealed marble. Honed marble and wonderful new sealers prevent staining in most situations.
