How to Caring for And Seal a Marble Dining Room Table

A natural material that has created some of our worlds most beautiful sculptures and architecture, marble remains timelessly desirable and durable, blending equally as well into modern contemporary homes as it does within formal surroundings. The word, 'marble' is derived from the Greek meaning 'shining stone.

Marble is a porous rock from the limestone family and it will quickly absorb water and liquids. It will also fracture from heavy blows, crack with extreme changes in temperature, and stain from acids in natural dyes and food colourings, therefore, it needs to be cared for and maintained adequately, so that it can age gracefully.

Prevention is better than cure, so most importantly ensure that the table top is sealed. A sealant fills in the pores in the stone and repels liquids. Your local hardware shop or local stonemason should be able to advise on the different sealant options available with the different finishes, from polished to matt.

Applying the Sealer Steps

l  First, I wiped off the table with a dry rag and made sure it was squeaky clean.

l  shook up the bottle of Sealer and put beach towels on the ground where I was going to spray

l  Per the directions, I made sure to keep the area very wet and evenly coated. To get it even, I used a kitchen sponge and patted the sealer all around that small area.

l  I continued doing this until the entire table was covered with sealer.

l  The instructions inform you to keep the area fully wet for 15 minutes. So again, if it looks like it’s drying…

l  Once it’s been 15 minutes, I wiped the excess sealer off with an absorbent rag.

l  Seal your countertop once a month. In order to provide the best possible protection for your countertop, you’ll need to repeat this process about once a month. Your marble countertop table can stain easily and quickly, but with a strong sealer always on it, you’ll have a little more time to clean up any spills and prevent staining or etching.

How much effort is required to properly care for a marble table? Generally, you just have to be careful!

If there is a spill, especially something acidic, wipe it up immediately.

If you choose white marble, do not use wax. It could cause serious discoloration, possibly turning your beautiful white to a dull yellow.

Is the beauty of owning a marble table worth the effort of maintaining it? Absolutely! An elegant marble table can be the centerpiece of a room. You will likely find that it is your favorite piece of furniture in your home. Luckily, it will last forever, so you won’t have to replace it!
