Stepping stone

Measure the areas where you want to use stepping stones to create a path and take those measurements with you when you are purchasing the stones. After selecting the stone, take the measurement of the stone and add 6 inches. This will include the interval between the stones. Divide the total measurement of the pathway distance by the stone/interval measurement. This will be the number of stones you need to purchase. Buy a few extra stones to keep in case a stone needs to be replaced in the future.

Before laying the stepping stones, be sure the soil is level and compacted; this will create a solid surface to walk on. If you are creating a pathway in the lawn and don't want to have to trim the grass between the stones, spread sand and gravel in-between the stepping stones
